Japanese brand CA4LA has spread hats as a fashion item to a wide range of generations. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, CA4LA has released a variety of special commemorative items. We picked a few of our favorites to introduce to our readers.
The limited edition special hat (￥193,320_) custom made by Los Angeles-based hat-maker Nick Fouquet
Designer Nick Fouquet manufactures all of his hats with traditional methods and has been attracting the attention of many members within the fashion industry for his high-end designs.
Featuring a soft crown and sturdy brim, you can feel the quality of the fabric by feeling its texture and add an accent to your overall style. This is what makes Nick Fouquet’s hat so special. The latest series of hats were designed based on the theme, “life and death.”
All skull embroideries and hardening processes are done by hand, with each item featuring its own unique look. With beautiful embroidered bird and flower pattern fabrics used for the inner linings, elegant details are even included in areas that are not visible.
We sat down with Nick, who visited Japan during the middle of November to celebrate the release of the hats, about the production background.

Life and death is very high-impact theme, but how did you come up with it?
“I heard that it was the 20th anniversary of CA4LA and the word “re-birth” came into mind. To me, the nuance of the word felt like a temporary stop followed by a new beginning. That is how I thought up of creating designs based on the theme of life and death.”
Were any new techniques related to this theme used to make the hats?
“I had never really used a skull motif before, so this was a new challenge for me. The key point was to use depict the skull motifs with pleasant expressions.”
When thinking about releasing these products in Japan, were there any specific points that you devised in particular?
“I focused on not making the brims too wide, and also used basic colors, like tan-based colors, which are commonly used in Nick Fouquet designs. A beautiful contrast was created with the ribbon colors as well.”
On November 10 (Fri), the first day of the release, Nick took part in a trunk show at the CA4LA Omotesando store. With his special steamer brought in from Los Angeles, a burner processing service was provided to customers on the site.
A roar from the crowd the moment the flame flared up on the crown.
Nick showcased a stunning performance with elements of entertainment incorporated into it. With the chance to see top-notch hatmaker techniques that aren’t normally shown to the public, the venue was surrounded in mystique and excitement.
The special custom-made hats are currently on sale at the CA4LA Omotesando store, Daikanyama store, Shibuya store and the GINZA SIX store. The anniversary models will not be available once they are sold out, so please don’t miss out on this opportunity.
Many people may be wondering where you can purchase Nick Fouquet’s hats and if they can only be ordered in Los Angeles. Currently, multiple models are carried by the CA4LA Omotesando store, Daikanyama store, Shibuya store and the GINZA SIX store. Check here
